The 431 Squadron was formed in 1942 during World War II at RAF Burn and flew Wellington B.X. medium bombers with the No. 4 Group RAF Bomber Command. Moved to RAF Tholthorpe in 1943 to bring all RCAF squadrons together (No. 6 Group RCAF) and flew the Halifax B.V. heavy bomber. They later flew the Lancaster B.X bomber before disbanding in September 1945.
The Squadron was reformed in 1954 to fly the Canadair F-86 Sabre. Between 1969 to 1978 the Squadron performed numerous duties before officially becoming the 'Snowbirds'.
Since its creation as the Snowbirds, the 431 Squadron has lost the following; lest we forget:
- Captain Lloyd Waterer (10 June 1972)
- Captain Gordon de Jong (3 May 1978)
- Captain Shane Antaya (3 September 1989)
- Captain Michael VandenBos (10 December 1998)
- Captain Miles Selby (10 December 2004)
- Captain Shawn McCaughey (18 May 2007)
- Captain Bryan Mitchell (9 October 2008)
- Sergeant Charles Senecal (9 October 2008)
