Constable Campbell was stationed at Kincardine at the time of his death. He was on patrol with Constable W. Sullivan. They were on the lookout for a vehicle that had earlier evaded police. The proceeded to a location that they thought would give them an advantage in search of the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle rounded a turn without lights and struck the passenger side of the cruiser killing Constable Campbell. Constable Sullivan was injured in the collision and 2 teenage girls in the suspect vehicle were killed.
The suspect driver, a 20 year old was found to be drunk and driving on a suspended license. He faced three charges of criminal negligence causing death and one of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. He was sentenced to 30 months in jail along with the lengthy time he served up to the trial and had a lifetime driving ban.
Constable Campbell was with the OPP for 14 months. He was survived by his wife and parents.
