Raymond Jerome Walter died tragically in the line of duty as a volunteer firefighter on March 17, 2011 while performing a search and fighting a fire at the local dollar store in Listowel, ON. While performing their duties, the roof collapsed and trapped Raymond Walter (North Perth Fire Department, Listowel Station), alongside District Deputy Chief Kenneth Rea (NPFD, Atwood Station), making it impossible for them to get out or to be rescued as the fire progressed. Ray had always dreamed of following in his father’s footsteps as a volunteer firefighter, joining in 2008, and was able to serve on the department with him before he retired. Ray had just turned 30 years old, had just started to build a new home, and was looking forward to starting a family with his new wife.
Ray loved his work at Ward & Uptigrove as an accountant, and was very proud to earn his CGA designation in 2007. He took pride in his career and excelled, but still looked forward to relaxing days off for golfing with friends and family at the Listowel Golf Club, the location of the defibrillator donation. He loved to play sports, some of which included baseball with the Danamoes, curling, billiards, and hockey. Ray was a loyal Toronto Maple Leafs fan, and stood by them no matter what!
Ray also served his community in other positive ways, such as being the Treasurer, and then Vice-President of the Listowel Kinsmen. Whether it was volunteering for McDonald’s Cystic Fibrosis Day, dealing cards for Vegas Night, or putting on the gigantic Mr. Paddy mascot suit for local events or parades, he always had a smile on his face and was willing to give up his free time to help others. Due to Ray’s commitment to being involved and doing good things within the community, he continues to be honoured in many ways including through his charity the Ray Walter Memorial Fund that aids in community betterment, as well as through this worthwhile and important cause for making defibrillators available through the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund.
Many things have come of this tragic incident, though what Ray would have been able to accomplish in his lifetime would have been even more significant! Survived by his wife Holly (Van Oene) Walter, as well as parents Ron and Rosemary, and sister Rachel, Ray is missed every day - though we will always carry him in our hearts , continue his good work, and keep his positive attitude!
- submitted thanks to Holly Walter.
